How to form a UK limited company

Registering a company in the UK is straightforward when your details are right first time. Here is exactly what happens, and what Companies House needs from you.

    Check your company name is available

    Your name must be unique on the register and must not use a sensitive word without approval. Our free checker searches Companies House as you type.

  2. 2

    Decide who runs and owns the company

    You need at least one director aged 16 or over and at least one shareholder. The same person can be both.

  3. 3

    Give a registered office address

    This is the official address for Companies House and HMRC, and it appears on the public register. Use ours to keep your home address private.

    Choose your SIC codes

    SIC codes describe what your business does. You can pick up to four, and change them later.

  5. 5

    Verify identities and file

    Directors and PSCs verify their identity, then we submit your application. Most companies are incorporated within 24 working hours.

Timings are for applications submitted on a working day with complete details and identity verification. Companies House processing times can be longer around bank holidays.
